International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

Reverse The Trend is honored to commemorate the International Day on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. This day is a reminder of the urgency to eliminate one of the most destructive weapons in the world. This day is also a solemn reminder of the many actions still needed for the eradication of nuclear weapons . Nuclear weapons did and continue to inspire fear and despair, especially for the frontline communities. These communities are the most impacted by the destructive effect of nuclear weapons and have been suffering the consequences of nuclear tests for decades, from radiation-related diseases to environmental destruction. This day is also a commemoration for the victims and a day to reflect on the weight of our actions.

2021 marks seven years of commemoration, seven years of commitment without concrete results. Nuclear disarmament still is out of reach. More than 13,000 nuclear weapons are still operational and worse, countries possessing nuclear weapons actively seek to modernize them. The philosophy of nuclear deterrence still dominates, breaking the noble goal behind this commemoration day.

A world free of nuclear weapons is a future free of fear. This future can only be brought up by youth. Youth truly contain the key for leading the path towards nuclear disarmament. Reverse The Trend is committed to empowering the voices of youth and educating  them.

Giving the essential tools for youth to acknowledge the situation  enables youth to understand the situation and to reverse the trend. Youth embody the hope of a new philosophy but also hope for the victims to see a new world and to live without fear. A lone young individual cannot do enough, but with a whole youth community, they can turn the tides and make a real change.

Youth from around the world must come together as one to express their support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Youth are the leaders of today, and they will encourage states to accede to the TPNW. The TPNW is a tool for disarmament, which is ultimately a step closer to world peace.

We strongly affirm our commitment to pursue the nuclear disarmament ideal and to provide educational tools and a platform for young people to learn and rise as activists. As our name implies, we want to reverse the long-lasting trend inherited from the Cold War. We know youth will pave the way towards a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons and we will give them the lights to follow them. We will work even harder this year to ensure that the next commemoration of the International Day of Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons happens in the context of actual international nuclear disarmament.
